How Aruba Hotels and Rentals Can Get More Direct Bookings
Booking sites bring guests, but they take a cut of every stay. Here's how to get more guests to book on your own website instead.
If you run a hotel, guesthouse or vacation rental in Aruba, you probably get most of your guests through Booking.com, Airbnb or Expedia. Those sites are useful. They're where travelers start looking, and they bring people who would never have found you otherwise. But every booking they send you comes with a commission, commonly around 15% of the stay and sometimes more.
On a $1,500 week, that's more than $200 that leaves your business before you've cleaned a single room. Multiply that across a season and it adds up to real money: a new air conditioner, a pool renovation, or simply a better year.
The goal isn't to leave the booking sites. It's to get more of your guests, especially returning guests and people who already know your name, to book with you directly.
Why guests book on the big sites, even when they've found you
Many travelers find a property on Booking.com or Airbnb, then search for its name on Google to learn more. That's your moment. If your own website is slow, hard to use on a phone, or makes them email you to ask about availability, they go straight back to the booking site and book there. They trust it, and it's easy.
So the first job is simple: make booking on your website at least as easy as booking on the big sites. That means live availability, clear prices, and paying in a few taps.
What a direct booking website needs
A booking bar at the top of the page. Guests should pick their dates and number of guests the moment they land, and see right away what's available.
A real booking engine behind it. Systems like GuestWisely keep your calendar in sync with Booking.com, Airbnb and VRBO, so you never get double bookings, and guests can book straight from your website.
Online payment. Guests expect to pay by card when they book. In Aruba that usually means a local bank's merchant account connected through a payment gateway such as Powertranz. When the booking system and the payment system talk to each other, the whole booking happens without you touching it.
A fast, mobile-friendly site. Most travelers browse on their phones. If your pages take more than a few seconds to load, many will give up before they see a single photo.
Good photos and honest details. Show the rooms, the pool, the view and the walk to the beach. Answer the questions people always ask: parking, check-in times, how far to Eagle Beach or Palm Beach.
Give guests a reason to book direct
If the price is the same everywhere, many people will default to the site they already trust. Give them a small reason to choose you: a slightly better rate, a free late check-out, a welcome drink, or a free airport pickup. Say it clearly, right next to the booking bar: 'Best rate when you book direct.'
Then make sure returning guests come straight to you. Collect their email when they stay, send a short thank-you after check-out, and a friendly note before the next season with a returning-guest offer.
Show up when people search for you
Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, with photos, your website link and your reviews. When someone searches your property's name, you want your own website to appear at the top, not only the booking sites.
A small Google Ads campaign on your own name can also help. It's usually cheap, because few people bid on it, and it puts a 'Book direct' link above the listings for booking sites.
A real example
We built the website for Beachside, a boutique hotel with modern suites in Palm Beach. Guests pick their dates in a booking bar at the top of the page, see live availability, and pay online. Behind the scenes, the GuestWisely booking system and the Powertranz payment system are connected through their APIs, so bookings and payments flow through without manual work.
Where to start
If you only do one thing this month, look at your website on your phone and try to book a stay. Count the taps. If it's harder than booking on Airbnb, that's where your direct bookings are leaking. We're happy to take a look with you, so book a call and we'll walk through it together.
